Concept Note – Anup Kumar Chand
My canvas becomes a home to thoughts, narratives, imaginations, fantasies, and realities drawn from my surroundings. My paintings reflect a sense of creative and aesthetic individualism, expressed through realistic and post-realistic forms that merge conscious and subconscious elements. My works unfold as fantasy-scapes, where improbable possibilities challenge perceptions of reality. Animal and plant forms occupy a significant part of the visual field, shaping imagined spaces that blend nature with human emotion. The images descend onto the canvas spontaneously, often dominating the scene in a theatrical manner. My figures are fluid and flexible, animated with movement and vitality, evolving through a process of continual renewal.
The colour palette in my creations is often monochromatic, yet the overall effect remains soothing and balanced. Subtle tonal transitions create harmony between elements and background. Through my art, I strive to evoke empathy, inspire love for humanity, and generate happiness for future generations.
In exploring my previous series the Nava Rasa (Nine emotions) and Barah Masa (Twelve months), I reinterpret the principal human emotions as aesthetic experiences that sustain vitality and continuity within the contemporary art context. My study of classical theories and literary allusions deepens the emotional and intellectual resonance of my work. Ultimately, my paintings create immersive spaces where reality, fantasy, and the subconscious converge—expressing identity, time, and individuality through symbolic imagery rooted in Indian miniature traditions.
